simple, effective : Flex-a-lite 4120 Translife Transmission Oil Cooler Kit - 20,000 GVW
I installed this myself on a '99 Jeep Cherokee XJ 4x4 4.0L (which did not have a pre-installed towing package or auxillary cooler). My Jeep does have AC. The installation is simple: splice into 1/4" metal tubing which carries trans fluid to the radiator. I did not spill any fluid during the intall, and did not need to top off when I was finished.
I have not noticed the engine running any cooler after this installation, which is not surprising since it is only for transmission fluid. I had no overheating issues prior to install. This was installed in order to comfortably tow more GVW with my XJ and provide less strain on the transmission. The only time I've towed anything since the intall was a 3500lb boat in a spring rain, which would have kept tranny fluid very cool by rain water. I have yet to tow in a hot, humid, St. Louis summer. That will be the test.
The intallation was relatively simple (the most invasive parts are removing the electric cooling fan and cutting the transmission fluid line), and the product was in good shape. It shipped quickly. I found better installation instructions online from a person who posts general work on his Jeep Cherokee. So, for clearer instal directions, I would google installing a transmission cooler on your vehicle.
I would recommend to a friend, and it was fun getting my hands a little dirty to install. I gave it 5 stars as I expected the instructions to not be vehicle specific, as this part is generic enough to work on many types of vehicles. If you are very particular on appearance, you may want to buy one that is black, as the aluminum shines through the grille (but, give it some use and that will dull down).
